THE BAPTISM (1884) A large family troops out to the local church where the latest member of the family is baptised by the village priest, one of the father’s brothers. The wedding is a great success, just but when the married couple retire to their chambers a messenger arrives with an urgent message for Jacques. THE LITTLE ONE (1882) The marriage of Jacques and Berthe has long been delayed because her parents were reluctant to consent on account of Jacques’ affair with a certain widow, but they finally agree. SOUVENIR (1882) A detachment of French soldiers is retreating in winter at nighttime through enemy-occupied territory during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 when they encounter an old man with his daughter, fleeing from marauding Prussian soldiers.
